Although it was not a participant during the Ottawa
Process, Niue signed the Mine Ban Treaty in Ottawa on 3 December 1997. Niue was
the nineth country to ratify on 15 April 1998 and was thus the first nation of
the Asia-Pacific region to ratify. Niue has never produced, transferred,
stockpiled or used antipersonnel landmines. It has no military force as its
defense is the responsibility of New Zealand.
