Kiribati acceded to the Mine Ban Treaty on 7
September 2000. It submitted its initial Article 7 Report on 4 December 2001,
covering the period from 7 September 2000 to 28 August 2001. In the report,
Kiribati stated with respect to national implementation measures, “No
action taken since Kiribati does ... not use, stockpile, produce, [or] transfer
... anti-personnel mines.” Kiribati was absent from the vote on pro-ban
UN General Assembly Resolution 57/74, on 22 November 2002. While there is
unexploded ordnance left over from World War II, especially on Tarawa, this is
not believed to include landmines.
